Who We Are

When an insurance company can no longer pay claims, IIGF steps in to help. Without IIGF, policyholders would be forced to navigate a complex liquidation proceeding, possibly waiting several years for a resolution to their claims and receiving pennies on the dollar. IIGF preserves the “insurance promise” by protecting people and businesses affected by the failure of an insurance company.

The structure of IIGF has in effect remained unchanged since its inception over 50 years ago. We operate according to an Illinois statute that defines IIGF’s responsibilities and limitations. A Plan of Operation specifies the ways in which IIGF carries out its role, and changes to that Plan require approval by the Director of Insurance. IIGF is funded primarily through assessments paid by member insurers, which may be passed on to consumers through insurance premiums.
